As we settle into this new year, the redevelopment of Schuman Roundabout is reaching an exciting milestone. Some areas directly touching the roundabout are now approaching completion! Meanwhile, works are starting on new zones of the project, changing the flow of vehicles and people. Read on to learn which areas are ready to explore and relax. We'll also explain how you should adapt your mobility in the months ahead.
Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée: This first phase of the project, running across the front of Parc Cinquantennaire, is now complete and fully accessible.
Charlemagne Esplanade: The area in front of the European Commission's Charlemagne building has reopened with seating blocks and a Villo bikesharing station.
Rue de la Loi Esplanade: This pedestrian area in the middle of the zone between the Justus Lipsius building and the Berlaymont is almost complete, and will soon reopen for walking and seating.
Petite Rue de la Loi: The stretch between Schuman and Parc Cinquantennaire is now complete, and the street furniture is being finalised. The zone will now reopen for pedestrians, cyclists and anyone wanting to sit down. Note that the planting will take place a bit later, so look out for new trees soon!
Avenue d'Auderghem: The works in the first part of Avenue d'Auderghem are also reaching completion. The zone will soon be free of barriers once again, allowing pedestrians to enjoy the new, much wider pavements and terraces.
Avenue de Cortenberg: Brussels Mobility continue their works on the area as far as Rue Le Corrège. Traffic is reduced to one lane heading towards Schuman. For enquiries, contact Brussels Mobility on 0800 94 001.
Rue Archimède: From 17 February works will begin on the area where Rue Archimède meets the Schuman Roundabout. Pedestrians will still be able to pass, and access to the metro is maintained. However, cyclists wanting to cross the zone will need to make a loop using Rue Stevin.
In the final plans, car traffic entering Schuman from Avenue de Cortenbergh will be able to drive up Rue Archimède, but for now the section between Schuman and the Jean Monnet crossroads will be closed to passing traffic. However, local traffic needing to access buildings and businesses in the section of Rue Archimède alongside the Berlaymont can still enter the zone via the Jean Monnet crossroads. Vehicles coming down Avenue de Cortenbergh will be guided directly onto Rue de la Loi via a temporary lane passing across the former roundabout.
These works are estimated to last until March 2025. More info and maps: in French - in Dutch.
Rue de la Loi (latérale): From 24 February, works will begin in the side road of Rue de la Loi running alongside the buildings of the European Council. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, and vehicle access to the buildings of the Council from Rue Froissart and Chaussée d'Etterbeek will not be affected. Passing cyclists will be diverted along the new two-way cycle path on the Berlaymont side of Rue de la Loi.
For the Résidence Palace and the International Press Centre, a temporary vehicle access route will be created from the exit of the Loi tunnel.
These works are estimated to last until the end of 2025. More info and maps: in French - in Dutch.
